Washington, DC—The Task Force on American Innovation, a coalition of businesses, trade groups, scientific and engineering societies, and university organizations that supports federally-funded scientific research, today issued the following statement praising the investments in innovation proposed in the Biden Administration’s FY25 Budget:
“Innovation investment is the key to our future. While we remain concerned about the significant reductions to innovation spending for FY24, we are encouraged to see President Biden’s budget propose increases in several of these same accounts. For example, the National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST) would see its base budget (excluding earmarks) increase nearly 30% to $1.50 billion in the Biden FY25 budget. The Biden budget calls for an increase of the National Science Foundation (NSF) budget by 12% to $10.18 billion. We are also pleased to see the Department of Energy’s Office of Science funding increased by 4% to $8.58 billion, as well as NASA’s Science Mission Directorate increasing by 3% to $7.57 billion. However, Congress set ambitious funding targets for these science agencies in 2022 authorizing legislation. The President’s Budget Request still falls short of these goals. In addition, the Task Force on American Innovation is disappointed to see that the Biden FY25 budget includes a reduction from $22.3 billion last year to $17.2 billion for Department of Defense early-stage science and technology programs. To remain a global leader in innovation, America will need to invest in both defense and non-defense research accounts. TFAI looks forward to working with leaders of the Administration and both chambers of Congress to build on these proposed increases and fully fund these vital accounts.”
