Washington, DC—The Task Force on American Innovation, a coalition of businesses, trade groups, scientific and engineering societies, and university organizations which supports federally-funded scientific research, today issued the following statement praising the release of the Bipartisan Senate AI Working Group report, “Driving U.S. Innovation in Artificial Intelligence:”

“We commend the bipartisan group of Senators who put this report together. It establishes an initial roadmap for current and future U.S. artificial intelligence policy, with a focus on advancing bipartisan legislation at the speed of innovation. Notably, it calls for full funding of the authorizations in the CHIPS and Science Act, which include key fundamental research accounts at the National Science Foundation, the National Institute of Standards and Technology, and the Department of Energy’s Office of Science   Despite years of growth in research activities —critical to U.S. competitiveness — FY24’s final appropriations bills cut funding across these agencies.

Congress set America on a path to continued innovation leadership by passing the CHIPS and Science Act in the 117th Congress, and since that time TFAI has been calling for full funding of these key programs. To remain the global leader in innovation, America must have a federally funded research enterprise that makes competitive investments in the foundational research that drives advances in AI and other key technology focus areas, and that fosters essential efforts to drive U.S. innovation. We salute Senators Schumer, Rounds, Heinrich, and Young for their work on this important report and look forward to working together to ensure the funding proposed becomes a reality.
